Vikram Sambat

Vikram sambat or bikram sambat is the historical calendar followed by Hindu. It is the officially used in Nepal only. This calendar is also used in some state of India. It is based on the position of sun.  It is believed that it was started from 57 BC(before Christ) in the remembrance of Indian king samrat vikramaditya for throwing out sakas from his place Ujjain now situated in Madhya Pradesh India. He was born in 102 BC and died on 15 AD. Some people also says the vimramaditya is a common title and was awarded to many kings, one of the example is Chandragupta vikramaditya. Some people believes that vikram Aditya is just a mythical character not real. However we can see inscription on temple now also. Many Sikhs also use this calendar and celebrate New Year on Baishak 1st. it is also same as Gregorian calendar. It is one of the first calendar that use lunisolar culture.  The rana dynasty of Nepal made the bikram sambat the official Hindu calendar from 1958 BS or 1901 AD. The first day of the year, baishak 1st falls around 13-15 April. Along with this Nepal uses Nepal sambat in the memory of sankadhar sakhwa (famous social worker who pay the debt of Nepalese).
